I vampiri, tutto il serial del 1915

120 Gaumont.

120 Gaumont. The Complete Les Vampires
A marathon session, from 9 in the morning until sunset, a chance to watch or watch again all ten episodes of Louis Feuillade's
Les Vampires in one go: the most adventurous, erotic, comic and subversive serial. An enormously successful classic from 1915, dominated from beginning to end by the sinuous figure clad in black tights of Musidora, a surrealist icon. The glorification of criminality, a "sexual revelati on" (in the words of Louis Aragon), irony challenges authority... Les Vampires appear as a lively cross between the notorious Bonnot Gang and the fascinating Apache. And Musidora/Irma Vep appeared, in every episode, in a different disguise. A 2015 restoration, an homage to 120 years of glorious Gaumont. Taking turns at the piano, for a virtual farewell to the public of Bologna, the musicians that contributed throughout the week to making the wonders of the silent era truly unique: Donald Sosin, Maud Nelissen, Gabriel Thibaudeau, Antonio Coppola and Daniele Furlati.

Cinema Lesson. Caterina d'Amico talks about Rocco and His Brothers
Rocco was born from many influences, the script was worked on a lot, with many characters, it was a real struggle. Between one thing and another, the screenplay took us a good six months, a crazy amount of research. And then the revision, the revisions!” That's how Suso Cecchi d'Amico remembered writing Visconti's masterpiece – screened in Piazza Maggiore on the penultimate day of Il Cinema Ritrovato –, a process she contributed to along with a 'dream team' of screenwriters composed of Vasco Pratolini, Enrico Medioli, Pasquale Festa Campanile, Massimo Franciosa and Visconti himself. Caterina d'Amico, Suso's daughter, will be the protagonist of this final Cinema Lesson of the Festival, telling us about the complex process involved in making the film, from screen writing to final editing.

Ritrovati e Restaurati: The Man and the Moment

Recovered and Restored: The Man and the Moment
The exciting speedboat sequences and the cheerful romantic plot of this summertime comedy by Fitzmaurice, starring Rod La Rocque and Billie Dove, will without a shadow of a doubt entertain the audience on this final afternoon of Il Cinema Ritrovato. Shot in 1929 with the Vitaphone system, and therefore partly in sound, the film was released in Italy under the eloquent title
Rondine marina (Sea Swallow). We ho pe that this new Warner Bros. restoration, presented for the first time here in Bologna, can bid a fond farewell to the public of the Festival by immersing it in the joyous summer atmosphere of the beach!

Ritrovati e Restaurati: Xia Nü
Cinema Arlecchino, ore 16.45

Recovered and Restored: Xia Nü
The tightly edited fight scenes combined with the magical and spiritual elements of the plot, make
Xia Nü (A Touch of Zen) a thrilling film, and one in which director King Hu reveals himself to be a ‘tot al artist’: poet, writer, painter and musician, but also in his own way an observer of his country’s society, denouncing the darker and more reactionary forces in Chinese history (showing also the more 'secret' sides to the police). The new 4K restoration, supervised during the colour correction process by the film’s cinematographer, will be presented by Teresa Huang of the Taiwan Film Institute.

Closing Night: Rapsodia satanica, The Wizard of Oz 3D and 2001: A Space Odyssey
This year more than ever, the closing night of Il Cinema Ritrovato will be ‘the greatest show on earth’. Keywords will be: total w ork of art, synesthesia, the exhilarating coexistence of strong visual and auditory sensations. In Teatro Comunale at 20:30,
Rapsodia satanica (1915-17, probably the high point of all Italian Silent Cinema) will offer up a genuine ‘total’ artistic experience: the Pre-Raphaelite, Symbolist and Art Nouveau citations, exalted by the splendour of the original colouration, the dark sensual atmosphere, a mix of Faust and Decadentism, all blended together with Pietro Mascagni's musical score, “the greatest gift any composer has ever given to the cinema” in the words of Maestro Timothy Brock, who will direct the orchestra of Teatro Comunale. Following that, a fork in the path of this cinephile paradise: in Sala Mastroianni a farewell in Technicolor with The Wizard of Oz (1939) in the experimental 3D version, which literally allows the audience to ‘enter’ into the world of dreams and fantasy of Oz; in Piazza Maggiore, the grand finale and arrivederci from the Festival with 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Stanley Kubrick film that remains, throughout the decades, one of the most dizzying visual, acoustic and psychic experiences in the history of cinema, especially in this unique 70mm period print from BFI, and above all on the big screen of Il Cinema Ritrovato.
